The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves reshaping or reconstructing the nose. It is commonly referred to as a “nose job.” The goal of rhinoplasty is to improve the aesthetic appearance of the nose or correct functional issues, such as breathing difficulties. Because the nose is the defining characteristic of the face, a small alteration can dramatically refine your appearance.
Rhinoplasty is a highly individualized procedure, and Dr. Cohen is renowned for his natural looking approach. His objective is to improve the overall balance and symmetry of the nose in harmony with other facial features. During your consultation, Dr. Cohen will thoroughly explain how the nasal structures, bone and cartilage, can be sculpted to reshape the nose. At times, a better balance can be achieved with a chin augmentation, performed at the same time as the nasal surgery. If the goal is to improve nasal function, the surgeon may adjust the septum or shrink or trim the turbinates for better nasal performance and unobstructed breathing.
Rhinoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes incisions either inside the nostrils (closed rhinoplasty) or across the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils) with additional internal incisions (open rhinoplasty). The surgeon then reshapes the bone and cartilage to achieve the desired outcome.
After surgery, a splint is used to immobilize and protect your nose for at least seven days. There may be temporary packing inside your nose, which is usually removed the morning following surgery. You may feel puffiness in your face, especially the first day after surgery, and medication is provided to ease discomfort. Bruising and minor swelling in the eye area may occur post-op. Cold compresses and head elevation are recommended to reduce bruising and tenderness. Nasal dressings and splints are typically removed six or seven days after surgery. Activities are restricted in the weeks after the procedure.
Am I a good candidate for Rhinoplasty?
At your consultation in our Beverly Hills office, Dr. Cohen will thoroughly examine your nose to make the best rhinoplasty surgical plan. Excellent health and realistic expectations are prerequisites with facial plastic surgery. Many factors should be considered before surgery including skin type, ethnic background, and age. Prior to the nose alteration, a young patient must reach full growth, usually around sixteen.
